We had a very nice Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, although the weather certainly didn't feel very autumn-ish. On Sunday, I thought the best way for us all to build up a good appetite for Grandma's turkey dinner, and also to appreciate nature's bounty, was to go apple picking.
Unfortunately "nature's bounty" wasn't quite what we found...it was late in the season and this orchard was pretty well picked over. Chris had to climb a lot of trees to get the few apples left at the top.
Nevertheless, we did manage, with some effort and sweat (the weather was actually hot!), to bring home 30 lbs of apples, many of which will be going towards applesauce for the winter.
And the kids had so much fun on the play structure they have there surrounded by straw.
Grandma's turkey dinner was everything we could have wished. On Monday, I did something new and made another Thanksgiving feast just for us. Our home is rather too small for entertaining, but it's fun once in a while to go all out on a fancy meal all the same. I made a huge spiral honey ham, scalloped potatoes, corn and brussels sprouts, buttermilk chive artisan rolls (yes they were as delicious as they sound), and a very creamy pumpkin pie with whipped cream for dessert. I spent a great deal of the day in the kitchen, but I think it was worth it (if I may say so myself).
We brought out our seasonal autumn decorations, as well as my grandmother's china. And above the table we hung the gratitude mobile we had made--I got the idea from Twig and Toadstool. This was lots of fun to make and I think it looks lovely hanging there.
Special family times. Holidays are such a joy when there are little ones about. :)
What a special way to remind everyone of the little things that are so important.
