Handmade dolls are so special. When I was very young, my grandmother made me a cloth doll with yellow yarn hair that I loved so much. Recently I gave this doll to Jasper, and I'm so pleased that he loves it as much as I did.
I can't help but smile every time I see him tuck "Dolly" into his bed with the knitted teddy bear I made him beside her. Both dolls are rather humble in appearance--the doll's drawn-on eyes have almost disappeared, and the teddy bear's head is obviously misshapen!--but it just pleases me down to my cockles to see my son chose to give his love to these handmade dolls. He seems to understand that no matter what they look like, love went into them. We have plenty of store-bought stuffed animals around the house, but he doesn't care for them like these two.
I just gave my son my "Hazel" dog. It makes me so happy to see him care for something that was so dear to me. He loves it so much, but not as much as the elephant he's had since he was 9 months old.

I just found you through Renee's blog- what you said about being shy resonates with me too! I can hardly believe I am even doing a blog. . . ;)
Anyhow- I love this post- the very humble dolls are the best, by far!
