I was up before everyone else this morning, so I decided to do a little gardening...is there anything better to do at seven in the morning? :)
I remembered that I still had a few seed potatoes in a box. I checked on them...and found this!
It seems a waste to just throw them out...so I planted them. In one corner of our yard we had a few flowers planted. They had already flowered this year, and if we are living here next year, I had planned on pulling them up anyway and planting something edible. So...I dug up that bed and planted three seed potatoes.
Yes I know, the area is tiny, and it hardly gets any sun to boot...but I figured, this space is just being wasted anyway, and it didn't cost me anything to toss those potatoes down there and cover them with dirt. So even if we only get a few small potatoes at the end of September...it's all good.
As soon as the fruit appeared on our raspberry bushes, the leaves turned yellowish in between the leaf veins. Now that I think, this happened last year, too.
I checked in my John Seymour book, and he said that a common problem with raspberries is a soil which is not acidic enough--which makes the leaves turn yellow in between the veins. So I guess that's the problem. I'm not sure how to make the soil more acidic, but I had Kira scoop up some pine needles from the common area and I used these to cover the soil surrounding the raspberry canes. I hope that helps, at least for next year's growth.
Does anyone have any experience with this problem in raspberries? Any advice is appreciated! :)
Yesterday we couldn't go strawberry picking because of rain, but I think we're finally going to make it today...keeping my fingers crossed!
On that note, I have things to get done, so have a great day, faithful readers! :)
I didn't realize raspberries also liked acidic soil! In that case it's easy enough to stop by Lowe's or your favourite gardening store and pick up some sulfur to acidify the soil.
